Villanelle

A gentle riposte to Dylan Thomas’ exhortation to his dying father
If you are so, then so must be your way:
this principle directs you to your right.
Your nature must decide your final say.

The time arrives when you have had your day;
you have no longer any wish to fight.
If you are so, then so must be your way.

You love your son but must resist his sway;
he cannot feel the dying of the light.
Your nature must decide your final say.

Though gentle as you are you must say nay –
resist with all your strength his filial might.
If you are so, then so must be your way.

To live beyond the welcome of your stay
is not for you to claim as sacred right.
Your nature must decide your final say.

To come to dust we’re fated: come what may
we all arrive at last at that good night.
If you are so, then so must be your way.
Your nature must decide your final say.
