The perfumer
dons a white coat;
selects from a shelf a stoppered flask;
unstops it with care;
takes from her breast pocket a glass rod;
dips it into the flask, withdraws it;
hesitates;
leans forward;
gently inhales;
replaces the stopper;
takes a label from a drawer;
writes on it and sticks it on the flask;
places the flask to join others, similarly labelled,
on another shelf.
Our dog Holly
trots along a muddy track;
encounters a bent grass stem;
approaches it slowly;
hesitates;
leans forward;
gently inhales;
withdraws slightly;
proceeds ahead,
honouring the stem, in passing,
in her usual way.
